With the exception of four years, during which he was gaining mercantile experi­ence in a store at Evans City, John R. Helmbold spent his life in Butler County, PA, and identified himself with her in­terests. He assisted his father in his youth in his store, the latter conducting a large mercantile business there through many years, and also worked on the farm. Beginning in March, 1906, he was the popu­lar postmaster of Saxonburg and, although not an active politician, served on the School Board and Election Board. He was a man of public spirit and of progressive ideas; he installed a tele­phone plant, which was a sub-license of the Bell Company, and which was a great con­venience to the people of Saxonburg in general.
He was a member of the Wood­men of the World and the Maccabees, and was at one time was active in the Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias. He was very prominent in the Knights of Maccabees and served in official positions in the order for some twelve years.
