He was brought up in Mineral township, Venango County, PA, and obtained a limited education at the common schools. He engaged in farming in 1854, residing on the farm for much of his life, with the exception of a year in Ohio and two in Mercer County. He and his wife were connected with the Center Methodist church. He held various local offices, and was a Democrat in politics. [HVC 1890, 1035]
