He moved [from Pennsylvania] to Wisconsin when a young man, and for five years worked in the lumber woods, after which he went to Portland, Oregon, and later to San Francisco, California. He was superintendent of the Water and Fire Proof Paint Co., and proprietor of a wood and coal yard; he was a member of the board of education of the city.
