He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he resided all his life. He was a wagon-maker by trade, but for many years he took an active part in politics; he was sheriff of Allegheny County three terms. He reared a family of two sons and eight daughters, only one of whom was living in 1889.
