His mother died when he was between two and three years of age. He lived for several years with his grandparents, the Hawthornes, but later lived with his grandfather, John, until his nineteenth year when he made his home for years with his Uncle John. He operated the farm of his Uncle John, who was an invalid, for many years near Kilgore, PA.
