In 1879 she moved with her family to a Kansas homestead. She attended McPherson Academy at Republican City and boarded in town. She taught a few years in a country school and then went to Cripple Creek, Colorado, during the gold rush days. There she met her future husband, who was driving stagecoach over the mountains. In 1898 he went to the Yukon. After their marriage, they moved to a farm halfway between Phillipsburg and Republican City.
