He was born December 17, 1816. [DRH, 45]

A story of "Billy's" hiding place for his money was related by Mrs. Mary Brown. "In those days it was customary in all families to save all rags, usually in a box or bag, and once or twice a year the 'ragman' came around and purchased them. 'Billy' in looking for a safe place to hide a large sum of money decided to deposit it in Hettie's ragbag but failed to tell her about it. One day when he was absent from home the 'ragman' came around and pur­chased Hettie's rags, bag and all. A day or two later "Billy" discovered the bag was missing and on inquiry found that it had been sold. Immediately men were started in all directions to locate the 'ragman' and on being found, he restored the pocketbook to Billy, who was taught the valuable lesson that he should let his wife in on his secrets."
