He was a farmer and passed the greater part of his life in Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was noted for his fine horsemanship. He adhered to the Whig party, and his religious membership was in the Reformed church.

The number of children by his two marriages amounted in all to twenty-four.
