This family descends from a line of Irish ancestors long seated in and around Belfast. The first of this line to come to the United States was James Dunlap Reid, who in 1840 emigrated to America, and settled in western Pennsylvania. He was engaged in mercantile life, being a man of
good education and some means. The family home was in Allegheny County and West Newton, Westmoreland County.
