His early education was acquired in the schools of Piney township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, evincing in his studies a determination to succeed, and great energy of character. After leaving school he taught for a time in the same neighborhood. An opportunity offering to secure a good position as bookkeeper at Paint Mills, he accepted it and held the post for a number of years. He also served for a time as a county commissioner. In his political opinions he was a Democrat.
