He was born in County Down, Ireland, and at the age of nine, came with his family to America, and passed his life in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania.

He was one of the early merchants in New Castle, Pennsylvania.
Some years previous to his death, he had a narrow escape when he was thrown from a horse and dragged by his foot in the saddle stirrup, by which accident three of his ribs were broken. This was while he was serving as constable. He held membership in the United Presbyterian Church, and was a kind father and affectionate husband.
