He was educated at Princeton and at the Columbia Law School of New York, graduated in 1876, and was admitted to the Bar of New York in that year. He practiced his profession in the city of New York for a number of years, but on the death of his mother, in 1891, he returned to Millmont, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, where he then lived with the exception of years spent in Europe.
He was an independent in politics.
