In company with his brother Alexander, he came into possession of the tract of land their father had bought in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and removed to it from York County in 1802. He returned to York County and settled up his father's estate there before locating permanently in Washington County.
In 1816 he was elected an elder in the Chartiers Presbyterian Church.
