He came to Erie, Pennsylvania, with his parents in 1841, received his education in Erie Academy and learned his trade, that of painter. He was engaged in mercantile business from 1856 to 1859; went to Colorado in 1861, remaining three years, then to Montana for three years; then commenced work in the E. & P. R. R. shops, in Erie, Pennsylvania. He was fifteen years or more, so employed, at least eleven as foreman.
