General Notes: Husband - Isaac Hilliard

He was reared on his father's farm and received his education at the old log school house known as Brown School House. At the age of eighteen years he learned the carpenter's trade, which he followed off and on for the remainder of his life. He became a contractor in the third year of his trade, and continued this business also thereafter; during later years he built oil rigs all over the Pennsylvania oil fields, and some in West Virginia. In one year he erected as many as sixty-two of these. He became very prosperous and owned considerable property, having a farm of one hundred and thirty-two acres in Perry township where he engaged in general farming. In 1871 he moved to Perryville, and for over forty years lived in the town, where he owned a fine residence with fourteen acres of land adjoining.
He was a staunch member of the Democratic party. He was also at one time a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, taking a great interest in fraternal affairs.
Mr. Hilliard served as a soldier during the civil war, having enlisted August 6, 1862, in Company C of the Sixth Michigan Volunteer Infantry. He continued in the service for three years, and was discharged when in the heavy artillery, after having participated in many active engagements, and been on duty in Louisiana at Port Hudson, Baton Rouge, Fort Jackson, Fort St. Philip and New Orleans.
Mr. Hilliard was a member of the Presbyterian church at Parker, to which his wife also belonged. [GPHAV, 726]

He served in the U. S. Navy during the Civil War. [NQ, 241]
