He was born on the homestead farm in Butler township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and there grew to maturity. He afterwards settled on 200 acres of his father's land, where his son, Robert H., later lived. He and his wife were members of the United Presbyterian church, and in politics, he was a Democrat.
