General Notes: Husband - Seth Hoagland

Being born and reared on a farm, and having chosen the occupation of a farmer, he became the owner of one of the largest and most beautiful farms in Mercer County, PA. He was among the first farmers who introduced fertilizers and improved breeds of stock in Mercer County. For many years he gave special attention to bee culture, and was eminent in apiarian conventions. When quite young he was elected justice of the peace and served twenty-five years. He was originally a Democrat, but after the nomination of Seymour for President he did not act with that party. In 1882 he was nominated by the National Labor Party for Congress from the Twenty-sixth Congressional District, then composed of Butler, Crawford and Mercer Counties. He also engaged in a general store on his farm, and was postmaster at Hoagland Post-office. In religion he was an outspoken Restitutionist, believing in Adam all died and in Christ all will be made alive. Just what was lost in Adam is being found in Christ. He condemned the opposing creeds and rival sects composing the heterogeneous mass of baptized professions, and claimed the only way to immortal bliss is through faith in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

He was reared and educated in Hickory Township, Mercer County, PA. Choosing farming for his life work, he bought land at what became known as Hoagland Corners, in East Lackawannock Township. He was one of the first to introduce pure-blooded stock into Mercer County. In addition to farming he was also for a number of years engaged in mercantile pursuits, conducting a large general store at the Corners and serving both as postmaster and as justice of the peace for several terms. During his earlier life he was identified with the Democratic Party, but afterwards became an independent, at one time being a candidate for Congress on the National Labor ticket. In his religious belief he was a Restorationist.
