General Notes: Husband - Squire George Columbus Hofius

Residing at Hermitage, Mercer County, PA, in 1888.
He received a thorough common-school education in Mercer County, PA, and his early ambition was the law. His death, however, prevented him from realizing his ambition, and quite early in his youth he accepted employment as weigh-master at the coal mine operated by J. W. Ormsby and Company. He was afterward made bookkeeper and continued in that position until 1863, when he was obliged to relinquish work on account of ill health. His father died in 1866 and he then followed the call of duty by remaining at home to care for his widowed mother and other members of the family. His manifest ability and natural legal gifts, fortified by much hard study, had marked him as especially fitted to discharge duties of a judicial nature, and in 1868 he was popularly chosen as justice of the peace, which, by successive re-elections, he has held continuously and satisfactorily ever since. For many years prior to 1898 he also engaged in farming, but in that year retired from those pursuits and rented his land for like purposes. Until 1880, or up to the time of middle age, Mr. Hofius was a member of the Lutheran church of Hickory Township, his connection after that year was with the United Presbyterian Church of Sharon. In politics he was an old-time Democrat. [HMC 1909, 657]
