General Notes: Husband - John Hoge

He was born at Hogestown, near Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He entered the Revolutionary army in 1776, when just sixteen years of age, and became a lieutenant. During the war he visited Washington, Pennsylvania, and in 1782 settled on the land his father had purchased. On the 7th October, 1785, his father conveyed the greater portion of the large tract to him and his brother William. In 1789 he was elected a delegate to the State Constitutional Convention, and from 1790-94 represented the district in the state senate. He served part of a term in Congress from 1803-5 to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation of his brother, William. He built a frame house on the south side of Maiden Street, opposite the old Presbyterian Church (later Hayes' carriage factory). He also kept tavern a few years about 1800. Later in life he retired to his farm, lying between Washington and Canonsburg, known as the "Meadow Land" (later owned by Maj. John H. Ewing), where he later died.

He was second lieutenant in Col. William Irvine's (Sixth) Battalion, and was captured in the Canada campaign, at Three Rivers, June 8, 1776. He was not exchanged until 1779. In 1783 he was chosen a member of the Council of Censors under the constitution of 1770, and was one of the members of the Convention of 1790. He was chosen to the State Senate in 1791 and again in 1794. He was a Federalist, while his brother, William Hoge, was a Republican or Democrat.
