He attended the public schools of Warren, Pennsylvania, became a contractor and later owner of several successful oil wells. He was a popuar business man and highy esteemed; was a democrat; served as councilman; was an active member of the Warren Lodge, No. 481, Knights of Pythias.

He received a good, practical education in the public schools of his native county, after which he began working in the oil fields, and continued at that for several years. Finally he became a contractor, sinking numerous wells and building up a very prosperous business. In 1886 he began to purchase property, a little at a time; and started in the oil-producing business for himself. He became the owner of several wells, all confined to his district, and in successful operation.
