The oldest son of his parents, he was reared and educated in Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania. He reached his senior year in college, when on account of sickness he was compelled to give up school. He chose the law as his profession, and studied in the office of Wyly & Buchanan, in Waynesburg. He was admitted to the bar of Greene County in 1871, and in 1872 was elected district attorney, in which capacity he served for six years. He was an active member of the Democratic party.
