He was born in South Fayette Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, attended the public schools there and Duff's Business College at Pittsburgh, and prior to accompanying his two brothers, Wesley J. and James G., to Canonsburg, in 1904, conducted a general store at Oakdale, for twelve years.
