He was educated in the public schools of Le Mars, Iowa, and Connellsville, Pennsylvania. He first engaged in business with a firm manufacturing tin plate, then with Munson Brothers, plumbers, etc. When his father died he was appointed to fill out his unexpired term as county treasurer, his term expiring in 1903. He was then register and money order clerk in the postoffice at Uniontown for fifteen months, then returned to the employ of the Munson Heater Company. He was a Republican in politics, and a member of the Presbyterian church, the Grand Fraternity and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
