Dean F. Hovis, 74, active in community
Dean F. Hovis, 74, of 99 Palmer Ave., a retired Joy Manufacturing Co. employee, died at 12:35 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, at the Franklin Campus of Northwest Medical Center.
Born Sept. 18, 1917, in Irwin Township, Venango County, he was a son of Fred and Lottie Baker Hovis.
Mr. Hovis was a graduate of Wesley High School.
He worked in the time study, standard department at Joy, retiring there after 40½ years of service.
Mr. Hovis was a board member of the Franklin Hospital Corp.
He was a member of Rocky Grove Avenue Presbyterian Church where he was an elder and trustee. He was a member of the board of trustees of Presbyterian Homes in the Lake Erie Presbytery.
Mr. Hovis also was treasurer of Boy Scout Troop 28 in Rocky Grove and was a member of the Rocky Grove Volunteer Fire Department, Oil City Shin Diggers Square Dance Club and the Oil City IOOF Lodge.
He was married Oct. 25, 1946, to the former Kathryn Smith, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Richard L. Hovis of Pittsburgh; two brothers, Paul Hovis of Kennerdell RD 2 and Claude Hovis of Franklin; and two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Freeman of Grove City and Mrs. Fern Gadsby of Clintonville.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hovis was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy Hovis and Ernest Hovis; and one sister, Mrs. Almeda Grace.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Robert W. Gardinier Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Rocky Grove Avenue Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Jeffrey Harmeling, pastor, will officiate.
Interment will follow in Mount Union Cemetery.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to a charity of one's choice.
