He was reared in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, receiving his education in the local public schools and at Wilkinsburg Academy. During the first thirteen years of his business career he was employed as clerk in the grocery store of A. Stoner, and during that period held the office of assistant postmaster. In 1884 he entered the service of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company as ticket-seller at the Union Station, Pittsburgh, a position which he held for eight years. At the end of that time he moved to Edgewood, where he opened a grocery store in a small frame one-story building on the corner of Maple and Swissvale avenues. In consequence of the rapid increase of his business he erected the large brick structure in which he then conducted a very successful grocery business. In addition to this building he owned considerable valuable property in the borough. He belonged to the Royal Arcanum and the Order of Unity, and in politics was a stanch Republican. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.
