General Notes: Husband - Robert Johnston

He was a native of Scotland and an early settler in Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

He was born in County Antrim, Ireland, of Scotch-Irish parentage. With two brothers and a nephew he emigrated to America some time in the latter part of the eighteenth century, landing at New York. There Robert separated from the others, going to Virginia, and it seems he was never afterward able to locate the other members of the family. By trade he was a cooper, presumably having learned that business during the long voyage on shipboard, on his way to America, the trip often taking several months on the water in those days. In Virginia he married and about the close of the eighteenth century or at the beginning of the nineteenth he and his wife came into Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and located in Antrim township, where he followed coopering. He became locally prominent and served for a time as justice of the peace. He next removed to the foot of the Blue Ridge, on the pike, three miles west of Waynesboro, where he spent the balance of his life, dying there, and he was buried at that location. On the death of his wife, in 1868, his remains were disinterred, and both were laid away in the shadow of Harbaugh's Church. [BAFC, 591]

He came to Franklin County, Pennsylvania, from Belfast, Ireland, in the early days of the county. [BAFC, 598]

General Notes: Wife - Nancy Howell

Her father was a sea captain and a resident of Virginia, where she was born. The Howells were of Scotch-Irish descent. [BAFC, 591]

from North Carolina, but of English extraction. [BAFC, 598]
