His early education was acquired in the schools of Mercer, Pennsylvania, and in 1900 he entered the East Liberty College for a preparatory course; he then attended Duff's Mercantile College, and after a thorough course in this institution engaged in business for himself in the coal and coke brokerage line. Later he established himself in the real estate and fire insurance business, with offices at Penn and South Negley avenues, East End, Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Pittsburg Country Club and the Pittsburg Board of Trade.
