She graduated at the Meadville Academy when fifteen years of age, and then joined the ranks of teachers as one of the youngest members of the profession. Her first pay was six dollars per month and board, which was considerably advanced after she had faithfully studied under her step-father, Mr. Donnelly. She was successfully and profitably engaged in teaching until her marriage. [HMC 1909, 1035]
