General Notes: Husband - George Denver Humes

He was born on the farm that had been so long in the possession of his family at Export, Pennsylvania. He was educated in the local public schools. As a youth he worked with his father on the latter's farm and continued thus occupied until the year 1895, when he went to Indiana and began work in the oil fields there. He did not remain more than one year, however, in that place, but returned to Pennsylvania, where he continued his activities in connection with the oil industry. He spent nine years altogether in the oil fields, and then for five years worked as a coal miner at Export. At the end of that period, however, he returned to the oil business, entering it on this occasion independently, and he was successfully engaged therein on his own account. In this venture Mr. Humes met with a notable success, and came to be regarded as one of the substantial citizens of the region. In politics Mr. Humes was a strong Prohibitionist and very active in public affairs, having been councilman in Export for at least four years. He attended the Presbyterian church at Export, and was a trustee thereof and active in the work of the Sunday school. He was a member of Lodge No. 358, Knights of Malta, of Greensburg.
