He received his education in the public schools of Butler Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and then began work as a laborer with the Butler Water Company. He was later made a foreman on their construction work. From 1912 until 1918 he was a meter man for the company, and was then elected superintendent of the company.
Politically, he was a Republican. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and belonged to the Knights of Malta, Rotary Club, Y. M. C. A., and Board of Commerce.
