General Notes: Husband - James William Hutchison

He received a common school education, and, in 1879, entered North Washington Academy. In 1881 he entered Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1887. He also took a commercial course at Duff's Commercial College, Pittsburgh. In September, 1887, he entered the office of S. F. Bowser, with whom he read law, and was admitted to the bar, December 2, 1889. Politically, he was a Republican; was a member of Connoquenessing Lodge, Number 278, I. O. O. F.; of Butler Lodge, Number 211, K. of P., and was an adherent of the United Presbyterian church.

He was reared in Parker and Washington Townships, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and was given superior educational advantages. After completing his academic studies at North Washington, he entered Westminster College, from which he was creditably graduated in 1887, having completed a business course at Duff's Commercial College in 1885. In the fall of 1887 he came to Butler and pursued his course of law reading in the office of Attorney S. F. Bowser, and was admitted to the bar December 2, 1889. He devoted more than two decades to practicing law in Butler and, having all the qualities essential to success in his profession, he prospered along that line. He practiced in the local courts and also in the Superior and Supreme Courts, and the importance in which he was held was indicated when Judge Joseph Buffington, in 1899, appointed him referee in bankruptcy for Butler County. In addition to his large practice, he was interested in business enterprises to some extent.

For a time he attended the public schools of Washington township, and after the death of his father made his home with his grandmother Hutchison, and attended the schools of Parker township. He was prepared for entrance to college at an academy in North Washington, matriculated at Westminister College, and was graduated from this institution in 1887. Locating in Butler, Pennsylvania, he read law in the office and under the preceptorship of the Hon. S. F. Bowser, and was admitted to the bar December 2, 1889. For a number of years he served as referee in bankruptcy. As it is, his counsel was highly valued as president of the East Butler Water Company. He lived at No. 628 Walker avenue, a home which he had erected in 1907. Politically he was a Republican, and his fraternal affiliations were with the following organizations: Knights of Pythias, and he was at one time grand chancellor of the state of Pennsylvania; Sons of Veterans; Independent Order of Odd Fellows; and the Knights of Malta. [GPHWP, 1302]

He served as referee in bankruptcy for Butler County from February 2, 1899, to February 2, 1923. He was a member of the Butler County Bar Association, and was treasurer of this association beginning at its organization. In fraternal circles he is also well known, holding membership with the Knights of Pythias, past chancellor; past grand chancellor of the State of Pennsylvania; past supreme representative of the world; president of the Pythian Home Association of Pennsylvania; Knights of Malta, past commander; and Independent Order of Odd Fellows. In politics Mr. Hutchison was a Republican. He took an active interest in all civic matters and served as a member of the School Board of Butler.
