General Notes: Husband - William Lockery Johnson

He was born on the old Johnson homestead, near his later residence in Lycippus, Mount Pleasant township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He passed the first twenty years of his life in his native place. During his early childhood he was engaged in assisting his father with the lighter tasks involved in the operations of a farm, and also attended the local public schools, where he gained his education. When quite young he began to learn the trade of carpenter from his father, and was afterwards apprenticed to Ben Simpson, a carpenter at Latrobe, where he remained for four years. After having made himself a master of his craft, Mr. Johnson engaged in the contracting business and rapidly met with a very high degree of success. He built an enormous number of houses throughout Westmoreland County, including practically all of the town of Mammoth, and at times was engaged on as many as three hundred houses at once. He employed a force of one hundred and twenty carpenters and took the entire contracts for the work on the buildings which he erected, from the first digging of the foundation to the final preparation for the occupant. His business grew to perfectly enormous proportions, and he continued actively engaged therein for a quarter of a century or more, during which time he has constructed many thousands of houses throughout the region. He then went into church and school work and erected many of these buildings, including Trinity Reformed Church at Scottdale, the Reformed church at Pleasant Unity, the Methodist Episcopal church at Lycippus, and many other equally large and handsome buildings. He put up a very large number of school houses, and in 1912 built the Insane Asylum in Somerset County at a cost of over one hundred thousand dollars, in which work he contracted with eighteen masons to supply the cement for the varied construction works in connection with the building. He also erected a number of handsome country residences from the plans of well-known architects. He always superintended personally the work upon which he was engaged, although he often handled two or three jobs at once.
He made his home at Lycippus for more than thirty-five years, where he owned a handsome farm and country estate. For nine years he was a member of the School Board of Mount Pleasant township. For some time he was vice-president of the board and he also served as president.
