He received his education in his native city; he went to New York, where he was the bookkeeper for the United States Mortgage & Trust Company; next he was employed by the Screw and Bolt Company, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and later he was in the employ of the Pittsburgh Railway Steel Company.
