He was educated at the township schools and at New Lebanon Academy. He engaged in teaching for a few years, and in 1870 began the study of medicine under Dr. T. M. Cooley, who was located at Utica, PA. In 1874 he graduated from the Cincinnati College of Medicine and Surgery, and practiced in Clarion County, Penn., for six months. In 1875 he came to Hadley, the first physician to locate there, and he and his brother, Homer, engaged in an extensive practice. He was a member of the county and State medical societies, a member of the Eureka Lodge No. 290, F. & A. M., of Greenville. For ten years he was examining physician for Madison Lodge A. O. U.
