He was a cousin of his wife's mother.

He was born on lands located by his grandsire, Nicholas Myers, Sr. His parents later moved to Conewago Mills.
In 1842, when the Whigs had a majority of 700 in Adams County, Pennsylvania, he was elected a member of the Legislature by the Democrats.
