General Notes: Husband - Capt. John Bucher Johnson

He was educated in the public schools of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and in Captain Partridge's military school, but completed his education at Washington College, Pennsylvania, where he graduated in the class of 1852. He adopted civil engineering as his profession, and until 1861 was engaged in several of the public improvements in the state. At the breaking out of the Rebellion he entered the Eleventh Pennsylvania regiment, Colonel Jarrett, and was appointed captain of a company from Pittston. On May 14, 1861, he was appointed by the Secretary of War, General Cameron, first lieutenant in the Sixth Cavalry of the regular army, and was subsequently made brevet-major and lieutenant-colonel for meritorious service. He became captain by regular promotion February 3, 1875. He served on the staff of General Hancock at Baltimore, and at New Orleans, and was afterwards assigned to several stations in Texas. In April, 1870, he was obliged to leave Texas on account of failing health, and returned to his home at Harrisburg, where he died.
