General Notes: Husband - Harry Swikert Schaefer

He received his early education in the public schools, and after completing his studies there took a position with Joseph Horne Company, of Pittsburgh, wholesale dry goods merchants, and was there employed for four years. He then engaged in the glass business with Bryce Brothers at Pittsburgh, learning the trade of mould making, and after severing his connection with that concern went to Findlay, Ohio, where for three years he was employed with the Findlay Flint Glass Company. In 1892 he returned to Pittsburgh and entered the employ of the United States Glass Company. On December 1, 1893, he removed to Jeannette, and this city has remained his home ever since. Here he entered the employ of the McKee Glass Company and remained with that concern until February I, 1907. All these various tasks served to add to his fund of experience and knowledge of business conditions generally, so that when, in 1907, he yielded to an ambition which had for many years been uppermost in his mind, namely, engaging in business on his own account, he was amply prepared for the move. Accordingly he engaged in the real estate and insurance business.
He was a Republican in politics, and always allied himself prominently with the local organization of that party in Jeannette. He served as assessor three years and in November, 1913, was elected tax collector for a term of four years, and in November, 1917, was reelected for a second term of four years, having received the nomination of all the parties. He was a member of Philanthropy Lodge, No. 225, Free and Accepted Masons, of Greensburg Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, of Pittsburgh Consistory, of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, and took his thirty-second degree in Free Masonry. Besides these Masonic bodies, Mr. Schaefer was also affiliated with the Thomas K. Semple Lodge, Knights of Pythias, and the Junior Order of American Mechanics. He was member of the Jeannette Chamber of Commerce.
