He was educated at the schools of his native county, and at Shippensburg Academy; he was a farmer in early life, but in 1858 went to Shippensburg where he engaged in the hardware business for five years. In 1878 he once more returned to the old place of 160 acres where he then resided.
He and his wife were Presbyterians.
He identified with the Republican party.
