He emigrated to the United States shortly after marriage, settling in Richmond, Virginia, whence he went to Fredericksburg, Virginia, thence to Hagerstown, Maryland, and finally to Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where he remained until his death. He was by trade a tinner and coppersmith; in religious belief a presbyterian; and was the father of six children, four sons and two daughters.
