He was of Scotch-Irish descent, his ancestors having been driven from Scotland into the north of Ireland by the persecutions of Charles II.

He came to America from Castle Derg, County Antrim, Ireland, in 1769, and settled in the Cumberland valley, near Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. He was by profession a physician, and upon the breaking out of the Revolutionary War he entered the army as a surgeon, and served for three years, when he died in an army hospital.
