He was brought up on the family farm and sent to the local public schools. He was a farmer, and from 1876 resided on a farm of 102 acres in Cowanshannock township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.
He and his wife belonged to the Presbyterian Church. He served as a justice of the peace of Cowanshannock township beginning in 1907, having been elected on the Republican ticket.
