General Notes: Husband - Henry M. Jones

He was educated in the common schools to a certain point, but attained his education beyond that through his own efforts outside school rooms. He qualified as an instructor and began teaching at the age of eighteen in the Elmwood school, Franklin township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he taught two years. He taught continuously for twenty-three years, seventeen of which were spent in the Concord school. In 1869, so well and favorably had he become known in educational circles, he was elected superintendent of public instruction for the county of Westmoreland. At the close of his term of three years he was unanimously chosen for a second term. There was then about three hundred and thirty schools in the county which was increased during his term of six years to three hundred and sixty. Mr. Jones was a capable and energetic superintendent, and during his term of service there was a notable advance and improvement in educational methods, standards and economy of administration. After retiring from office he spent one year off duty, visited the great west and thoroughly enjoyed his well-earned rest, then returned to his profession and taught continuously thereafter until 1892, when he retired to home and private life on his farm, which for over fifty years was his home. Mr. Jones was a lifelong Democrat.

There were no children born of his marriage, yet there were always childish voices gladdening the home and there were many who grew to manhood and womanhood whose only home was that of Mr. and Mrs. Jones. One girl they brought up from childhood was his housekeeper and capably conducted the domestic affairs of his home after the passing of his wife.
