He was a native of Washington County, Pennsylvania, having been born on the north fork of Pigeon creek, where his school days were passed. He grew to manhood on the home farm. He learned and for many years followed the carpenter trade, and but later was farming on his own place, which contained seventy acres of land, situated about six miles south of Monongahela, and four miles west of Charleroi.
