His father was Vice-President of the Council (Pennsylvania) under William Penn, and is said to have traced his ancestry back to Mirick or Meirig, Prince of Demeca, born A. D. 490.

He was born in London, England, and came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with his mother, in 1718.
