At an early age he left West Monterey, Pennsylvania, and went to the state of Minnesota, where his aunt Rebecca (Keefer) Jackman lived. In 1914, he joined the Canadian Navy. When the United States entered World War I in 1917, he transferred to the United States Navy, serving until the conclusion and was honorably discharged; Fireman 2 Class, U.S. Navy. After his discharge, he was employed in contracting in the building of bridges and moving houses. In later life, he was caretaker of the Veteran's Administration Hospital Grounds at San Diego, California. After he retired, he spent much time in deep sea fishing.
