He was born in Vermont, and came to Conneaut township, Erie County, Pennsylvania, when he was a young man. He and his wife settled in Oil Creek township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, in 1845, and there spent the remainder of their days.

He and his wife were natives of Massachusetts. [HCC 1885, 1164]
