He was born and married in Northum­berland County, Pennsylvania, about the year 1800 came to central Pennsylvania, locating in what is now Haines township, Centre County. He followed the car­penter's trade for many years, but finally engaged in farming, in which he was quite successful. He was very tall, and in his younger days was re­markably powerful. In political faith he was a Democrat, and in his active years he attended the Lutheran Church regularly, he and his esti­mable wife both being members.
