He received a common school education, and always resided on the old family homestead farm. In 1888 he, with M. C. Dobson, P. A. Shannon and John Cannon, established the Empire Brick and Tile Company, of which he was secretary and treasurer, and carried on business in the manufacture of brick and tile. He was a stanch Republican. Both he and his wife were connected with the United Presbyterian church at Centreville.
