General Notes: Husband - William Smearbaugh


He was reared in Tionesta, Forest County, Pennsylvania, and received a limited education in the common schools. In 1881 he embarked in the hotel business at Tionesta, and conducted the Lawrence House two years. In 1883 he was elected treasurer of Forest County, serving one term of three years. In 1880 he engaged in mercantile business in Tionesta, with G. G. Butterfield, under the firm name of William Smearbaugh & Co.; he was also in the lumber business beginning in 1886 along with William Lawrence, under the firm name of Lawrence & Smearbaugh. He was a member of the German Reformed Church, and of the A. O. U. W. Politically he was a Republican.
