He was reared in Tionesta, Forest County, Pennsylvania, and learned the printer's trade in the office of the For­est County Bee (later the Forest Republican). He worked at the case as a journey­man ten years, and in January, 1879, purchased the Forest Republican, which he then successfully conducted as editor and proprietor. He was a member of the German Reformed Church and of the A. O. U. W. In politics he was a Republican.
